HRC and the City

Posted June 5, 2008

Tuesday night as I sat on my bed - head thoughtfully cocked to one side, legs crossed, and Manolo’d feet dangling off the side of my bed - watching Clinton’s speech, I couldn’t help but wonder if this great politician and boundary-breaker for woman was one primary away from a Thorazine drip.

Hadn’t she just heard that Obama clinched the nomination by winning the requisite number of delegates?  Didn’t she realize it was time to start healing a divided Democratic Party or go down as the Ralph Nader of 2008?

Clearly not.  After briefly acknowledging her opponent, Clinton eulogized about the greatness of her political campaign, proclaimed to have won nearly a million more votes than Obama subtly or not so subtly equating an Obama win with Bush’s stolen 2000 victory, and then, in what can only be described as a massive power trip, refused to concede and leave the stage gracefully.

Call me naïve but I really thought Clinton was going to announce her unequivocal support for Obama and call on her supporters to do the same.  I thought that’s how she would repay her supporters, particularly women, who can not afford a Democratic rift that could result in four more years of Republican warmongering and economic incompetence.

I can completely understand the solidarity that so many women feel toward Clinton.  We watched Sex and the City in droves over the weekend not just for the shoes (which rocked) but also because we can relate to Carrie et al as they challenge gender norms and struggle to define their lives albeit in between shopping sprees.

Clinton’s run for the presidency was the ultimate “stick it to the man.”  The “take out the garbage,” “nagging wife,”“bitchy,” “PMS” slurs heaved at Clinton by an overwhelmingly male-dominated media encouraged many fence-sitting women to throw their weight behind her.

But now it’s time forClinton’s sisterhood moment.  In an election year with so much at stake and with so many factors in the Democrats favor, it would be tragic if Republicans win because the Democratic house was divided.  Hillary can reduce the odds of this outcome by gracefully and full-heartedly handing the baton to Obama.

Come on,Clinton. Ring it on for us.

While you’re at it, ring out your sisterhood with this Sex and the City theme song.

Anticipation - Is Makin’ Me Wonder If Anyone Will Finally Win Tonight!

Posted June 3, 2008

It’s been a long, hard slog but we’ve finally arrived in South Dakota and Montana - the last two stops in this historic 2008 Democratic primary race.

With Obama just over 40 delegates short of the 2,218 needed to clinch the Democratic nomination, the questions on everyone’s minds:

- Will enough undecided superdelegates endorse Obama tonight catapulting him to victory within hours of the polls closing?

- If he hits this magic number, will Clinton concede?

- If he doesn’t get enough votes, will he claim victory anyway?

- Will Clinton vow to battle on?

Ring out this electoral excitement on your cell with Carly Simon’s "Anticipation."  Or feel free to download one of the other over 100 ringtones on the site, or better yet, roll your own and submit it here.

To celebrate this Vulcan victory, download today’s selection of Star Trek ringtones and cell-phone videos:
